In his first novel, Between Lies and Legacy, Varun Gupta presents a poignantly beautiful story that distorts truth and perception, mourning and healing, silence and communication. Written in the wake of loss in his personal life, this is not just fiction but an introspection on how the human heart bears, recalls, and forgives.
The tale revolves around Aanya, a young woman who is saddled with her father’s failed reputation. To her, he was the man who had left behind nothing but words unsaid and despair. But when pieces of his writings and recollections surface, the world begins to change for Aanya. What she learns is not a man of failure, but one who quietly battled his own wars, against corporate politics, broken family relationships, and the relentless pressure of expectation.
Along the way, Aanya discovers that truth is not always articulated; it happens in the silences, slowly revealed in the resonance of what is unspoken. The novel sensitively explores this emotional unwinding, reminding readers of their own unspoken relationships and hidden emotions.
Varun Gupta, who penned this piece more than five years ago while juggling a high-pressure career and family obligations, says the book came to life from his own personal experience of loss over the pandemic. “When I lost my grandfather, I felt like time had stopped,” he says. “In the silence, I started writing, not as an escape, but to try and understand what I was going through.”
Every page of Between Lies and Legacy carries that authenticity. It explores not just familial love, but the universal struggle to understand those we’ve lost, and in doing so, understand ourselves.
At its essence, the book is about reconciliation: between generations, between perception and reality, and between who we are and who we hope we might have been. Varun’s writing is reflective and relatable, lyrical and earthy, written with compassion and emotional accuracy.
Between Lies and Legacy is not just a novel; it’s a mirror. It reminds us that healing often starts when we begin to hear the silences that remain after goodbye.
