Portugal already has a name, a face, and a cause to represent the country on the world’s most prestigious beauty stage. And it’s not just about catwalks, glitter, and dazzling gowns—though those are part of the package too. At 26, Maria Amélia Baptista was crowned Miss Portuguesa 2024 and is about to board a flight to India, where she will compete for the Miss World 2025 crown.
Born in Rio de Janeiro, raised in the charming town of Poços de Caldas, and Portuguese by choice and passion, Maria Amélia is a modern symbol of multicultural identity. She built her adult life in Porto, Portugal, where she found a home, pursued her dreams, and forged the bridge between her roots and the mission she now embraces.
And speaking of mission—hers goes far beyond the crown.
An entrepreneur, a woman with strong opinions, and a passionate advocate for the rights of immigrants and refugees, Maria Amélia uses her platform to amplify voices so often unheard. She also raises awareness about breast cancer in young women and supports social projects with admirable dedication.
Those who still think beauty pageants are only about appearances are mistaken.
With Maria Amélia, the concept takes on a new dimension: representing Portugal at Miss World is, above all, an act of empathy, awareness, and pride in one’s origins.
Her journey, which began in 2008 with her first pageants, is proof that elegance and purpose can—and should—walk hand in hand. Maria Amélia carries the responsibility of being a role model with grace and determination: for women, for young people, for anyone who believes that true beauty lies in having the courage to speak up.
In May, the world’s eyes will turn to India. And Portugal can stand proud: the woman representing the nation knows that being a Miss is much more than a title—it’s a commitment to others.
