The Silver Telly Award-winning short documentary Legacy, directed by celebrated filmmaker, actress, and activist Giovannie Espiritu, has been selected for the competitive film section of the Chroniclers of Truth, Bearers of Witness Festival at JAFEST 2024. The festival will be held in September 2024 in both Kaunas, Lithuania, and Lisbon, Portugal.
JAFEST, now in its second edition, is organized by Já International Theatre from Portugal and ALTR in Kaunas, in collaboration with the Kaunas Cultural Center, Vytautas Magnus University, and Cossoul. Supported by the Theatre in Palm Project, the festival honors filmmakers who shine a light on unpalatable truths, unsung narratives, and hidden voices in times of social upheaval.
Legacy powerfully aligns with the festival’s mission, as it reflects on the intergenerational impact of colonialism, cultural survival, and resilience within a Filipino family. Through the medium of spoken word poetry, the film offers a deeply personal and poignant exploration of how trauma and triumph are passed down through generations.
A member of the Producers Guild of America, TV Academy, and Alliance of Women Directors, Giovannie Espiritu has been recognized for their ability to blend narrative and documentary filmmaking to challenge societal norms and shed light on marginalized communities.
As the world continues to grapple with exclusionary narratives, Legacy is a powerful reminder of the need for representation, truth-telling, and the preservation of cultural stories that have often been overlooked or erased.
