The Korean Society of Mechanical Engineers, celebrating its 78th anniversary this year, held an international academic conference earlier this month under the theme “Mechanical Engineering Leading K-Defense Industry.” Major global companies such as Adobe and AWS were invited, and a total of over 1,300 papers were presented to introduce new knowledge in mechanical engineering.
At this academic conference, Professor Sung-Hoon Park of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Soongsil University in Korea was invited to present on the topic of “The Development of Smart Flipped Learning Using Metaverse based AI Virtual Humans (Ailey).” Professor Park received much interest from attendees by presenting a new educational method that combines the innovative educational method of “smart flipped learning” and the AI-based “virtual human Ailey” to transform the learning environment.
According to laboratory safety regulations, a certain number of prerequisite learning sessions must be completed each semester, and failure to do so may result in sanctions at the discretion of the class instructor. However, due to various circumstances, it is not easy to always meet these requirements. Especially with the content itself often being out of line with current trends, its effectiveness as educational material may need to be reexamined.
To address these issues, Professor Park proposed using Ailey as a lecture material character. By combining AI and edutech technology to add elements of “fun,” it is possible to deliver information to students in more relatable delivery methods. Additionally, Ailey can provide students with a highly engaging learning experience through interaction.
Furthermore, the Ailey project is an AI-based 3D virtual human living in an exclusive metaverse space called Aileyverse, while acting as a virtual celebrity in the real world simultaneously. Furthermore, as an educational material character for smart flipped learning, the project plans to expand its activities beyond the fields of entertainment and advertising to the educational sector.
Professor Park expressed his delight in being a part of the excellent AI technology in the Ailey project stating, “I am pleased to be able to apply Ailey in various ways to the educational field in the near future, and I will develop research to do so as a result of this academic conference.”
