Author Vern Thibedeau brings a unique book that takes a close look at how prisons work and what happens inside correction cells in “The Door,” now available in leading digital bookstores globally.
In an exclusive interview with Bookside Press, Thibedeau said his 26 years of experience in the penitentiary began at “Disney World”-or at least the prison that ironically carried that nickname.
“I just felt like people don’t really know what it’s like to be in a prison, working in a prison. So I thought, well, I was just trying to do sort of my memoirs, and I was one of the unlucky ones. I was punched out, I was a hostage a couple of times, and an inmate once pulled a gun on me and took us to Ottawa and ended up shooting two police officers,” said Thibedeau in an interview with the Bookside Press.
Throughout his tenure, Thibedeau dealt with some of the most dangerous inmates in Canada’s history, including Clifford Olson and others as bad as Paul Bernardo and Russell Williams.
Thibedeau said “The Door” is a story people would “experience” as if they’re working in prison, and there’s “everything absolutely gospel” about it in every chapter.
“I get a lot of comments from people saying it’s very interesting, and they’re glad I wrote it,” shares Thibedeau.
After the much-anticipated release of “The Door,” the book has amassed about 1,700 orders from the Kingston Penitentiary, a former maximum security prison located in Kingston, Ontario, where Thibedeau served. The Kingston Pen Tours, now a must-visit in the area, offers a rare and unique opportunity behind the walls of Canada’s most notorious maximum prison.
Thibedeau worked in five facilities within the Canadian corrections system for about three decades. Now retired, he works as an independent security officer. He lives outside of Toronto, Ontario, with his wife.
In a review on Amazon, Ghulam M., one of the readers, described “The Door” as “not like the regular autobiography or first-person experience type books that people write to share their stories.”
“He worked inside five different Canadian prisons for 26 years and shared unimaginable stories from what he experienced to whom he met. From the biggest names in crimes to the dangers of his job, he has been quite eloquent about his job details,” wrote Ghulam.
SJ Main, another reader, lauded the author for providing a realistic and honest look at the system and what such an environment can be like.
“If you have never known much about prison, and all you’ve known is what you see in movies, then this book is for you. The author talks about working as a correction officer in a Canadian prison. This made me wonder what other countries would be like,” wrote SJ.
Those who want to grab a copy of “The Door” may purchase it on Amazon and Barnes and Noble.
