The team over at GolfBlueBalls.com are long-time family friends and came up with the idea for a better LED golf ball while playing twilight golf during the Covid-19 lockdowns.
“We started playing 9 holes after work as a way to connect with each other outside during the lockdowns,” said Trent Tyler, the CEO of Blue Balls, “We routinely would have to end after the 6th or 7th hole when it would start getting dark, so we started playing with LED golf balls to get a few more holes in. We loved getting to play longer but found the balls we were ordering off of Amazon felt kind of cheap and didn’t fly well, so we decided to try and design a better ball.”
Trent and his friends reached out to dozens of manufacturers, sourcing samples and testing balls unless they aligned on what they felt was the perfect combination of feel, distance, and brightness. The final piece of the puzzle was aligning on the name and the mission.
“We always knew that we wanted to start a mission-driven business together, and when we came up with the name, Blue Balls, we knew we needed a partner that shared our sense of humor. The Testicular Cancer Society fit that bill in every way. Everybody on our team has lost a close friend or family member from cancer far too young, so when we learned of TCS’s focus on early detection & education, we knew we had found the perfect match.”
Trent went on to explain that Blue Balls donates 2% of all profits to the Testicular Cancer Society in addition to partnering with them on social media and branding initiatives.
“As we continue to promote and grow our business, we’re excited that we’ll also be spreading awareness for the Testicular Cancer Society and helping educate more people around early cancer detection. It feels great to contribute to something you believe in and be able to work with people you love.”
Trent and his team believe that one of the key components of what sets Blue Balls apart is that they are a true family business and have been collaborating together for decades. Trent has known co-founders Ben, Jake & Zack Gaston (brothers) since elementary school, while close friends Chris Bunker and Brooke Cavins round out the Blue Balls roster.
“When you’ve competed together on the playground, helped each other ask dates out to prom & spoken at each other’s weddings, you know you can trust each other when making tough business decisions.”
The Blue Balls team knows that challenges will present themselves, but Trent says, “We believe in each other and believe in the mission, so we feel like we have something special here. Plus, at the end of the day, nobody likes to finish early.”
