Scarring on a scalp can occur for several reasons. It may result from a hair transplant, an injury to the head or even a trauma to the skull. Whatever the reason, scars on a person’s head can cause untold damage to someone’s self-esteem.
You usually find flesh-coloured scars embedded into a head of dark hair or stubble, making them reasonably obvious to a person looking on.
Scars on a person’s head do unfortunately draw unwanted attention and regardless of always being taught ‘if you have nothing nice to say, don’t say it at all’ – comments are often made about a person’s appearance.
Say hello to scalp micropigmentation and scar camouflaging.
The most common reason people seek scalp micropigmentation treatment (SMP) to camouflage scars, is after they have had a hair transplant.
There are two kinds of hair transplant procedures that will leave unwanted scars on a person’s scalp.
Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) is a type of hair transplant that will create a scar to look like a strip across either the back or side of someone’s head. Follicular Unit Extractions (FUE) will create a number of small circular incisions leaving the recipient with small circular scars dotted across their head.
How will SMP help?
Scalp micropigmentation will help camouflage the scars by having pigment applied onto the scar tissue, allowing it to blend in with the shaved look. The treatment area will extend beyond the scar tissue, potentially 1-2cm above and below the scarred area to achieve an effective blend with the surrounding hair.
As scar tissue is slightly more unpredictable than undamaged skin, the treatment process can vary from client to client. Scars can potentially soak up the pigment quicker, resulting in excessive fading. This doesn’t cause any issues; it just means your SMP artist won’t be able to guarantee how many treatments may be needed and may need more than someone being treated for patterned baldness.
The pigment is applied to the skin and will follow the pattern of the existing hair follicles. Due to the needle being small enough to replicate a single hair follicle, it will start to create the illusion of a full head of hair.
Other types of scars that scalp micropigmentation can help camouflage include Keloid, Hypertrophic and Hypotrophic.
There are many factors that will determine how well scalp micropigmentation can conceal a scar. The colour of the tissue in comparison to the surrounding skin, the scar texture, the extent to which it has healed, the shape of the head, the amount of hair surrounding the area and the the skill of any practitioner chosen to remedy the situation, all play a part.
As you can imagine, your own research plays a vital part before having this treatment carried out. It would be best if you found an SMP artist who is fully accredited and has carried out the most appropriate training for this treatment.
