The NYC band Theophobia is known for their wild antics both on stage and in their colorful, attention grabbing music videos. The group consists of Matt Ellin, a guitar and bass prodigy originally hailing from Baltimore, and Dylan Mars Greenberg, a cult film and music video director and synth composer. Both sing and write music for the band, taking turns in various musical and visual roles.
Last month, in partnership with Hummingbird Magazine’s “Transcendent” stream which was created in partnership and support of Trans Woman of Color Collective, Theophobia was tasked with creating an album-length live stream consisting of their original music, and for the first time on film, their Catskills-style comedy.
“What we do is Catskills STYLE comedy,” emphasizes Greenberg. “It’s not Catskills comedy. We can’t say that because we don’t perform in the Catskills. Please don’t publish that the comedy is actually is of the catskills. We could be in very big trouble.”
The video was created with camera wizard Adam Ninyo, who produced and operated the primary camera for the special. Ninyo also released a critically acclaimed feature film this year, entitled “Disencumber”.
Says Ninyo of the experience: “Theophobia is my favorite band to shoot with. Dylan and Matt have an infectious sense of humor and a willingness to experiment that makes collaborating with them a really stimulating experience – and a ton of fun.”
Says Matt Ellin: “We recorded this set at my apartment for Hummingbird Magazine’s Transcendent live stream, which was a fundraiser for Trans Women of Color Collective. Adam Ninyo, who does much of the cinematography in our music videos, filmed us. It’s unique from anything else we’ve released, because it isn’t focused solely on music, but also shows off the comedy and performance elements of our band, both of which are a big part of shows. I think it gives a fairly good idea of what your average Theophobia live set is like, but then we’re very spontaneous. We’re thankful to Hummingbird for having us and to TWOCC for being an awesome organization that we have so much respect and admiration for.”
“It was grear getting to integrate the visuals I’ve created for our live shows over the last year into the film,” says Greenberg. “It really feels like a true way for someone to experience what we’re like live without the barrier of the screen getting in the way”
