Denmark – 21 Sep, 2020 – A full-time mom and self-publishing author is hoping to support new mothers as they go through the ups and downs of parenting.
Denmark-based Canadian Lindsay Madsen is launching her debut picture book called ‘The Lovely Haze of Baby Days.’ The playful, rhyming book, which features relatable illustrations and honest, candid writing, is both for mothers and babies. It gives little ones an early and age-appropriate introduction to language. For mothers, it is a companion piece to help them get through the tough days and the sleepless nights.
Lindsay Kellar-Madsen, a mother of four young children including twin girls, calls the book a tribute to the beauty and chaos of motherhood. “Motherhood is an odd mix of emotions. It changes your life forever but there is no one way to do it right. Even with easier access to information online, it can be overwhelming and exhausting.”
The intent, she adds, is to remind mothers struggling through the ‘baby blues’ that they are not alone.
This is a simple yet very important message because if unchecked, these ‘baby blues’ can develop into postpartum depression.
Data from the World Health Organization (WHO) reveals that “about 10% of pregnant women and 13% of women who have just given birth experience a mental disorder, primarily depression.” This figure is even higher for women in developing countries—15.6% during pregnancy and 19.8% after childbirth.
Depression is not just a silent battle for mothers. It has long-term impact on children’s growth and development, as it affects the mother’s ability to respond to their needs.
With the ongoing global health crisis due to COVID-19, the likelihood of maternal depression has increased because of forced physical and social isolation, according to a recent study. The researchers found that the number of women experiencing moderate to high anxiety increased from 29% to 72% during the pandemic. Those with depressive symptoms also increased from 15% to 41%.
Madsen notes that the book is her way of supporting fellow moms by making them ‘feel seen.’ “There’s still some stigma on how mothers should feel about having a baby,” she shares. “Many people still assume that because it is a natural part of life, we’ll cope eventually. And most women do. But if we can make that journey easier even in the smallest of ways and reduce the risk of long-term mental and emotional health problems, why not do it? We need all the help we can get.”
Aside from being a full-time mom and a budding author, Madsen is also a business developer focusing on health sciences and innovation at the University of Southern Denmark. She is starting a fundraising campaign on Kickstarter to help fund the initial print of the book. And she is hopeful that it will be the first of many inspiring stories she will share.
“My vision is to write honest, candid books about motherhood, childhood, and family life. I am confident that this book will resonate with families and bring a feeling of joy and connection, especially in these extraordinarily challenging times we are living in.”
