James Heiting is most often described with two words: tough and tenacious. As the Managing Partner of Heiting & Irwin, APLC in Riverside California, Heiting is a well-respected and successful personal injury lawyer and advocate serving clients in what is known as the Inland Empire (the metropolitan region inland of and adjacent to Los Angeles). Based in Riverside, Heiting has accumulated dozens of recognitions and awards for his work on behalf of victims of injury, malpractice, and unsafe work practices. He is a recognized Super Lawyer, a status awarded to only 5% of lawyers from across the US and that involves a rigorous evaluation in twelve key areas (including pro bono and community service) as well as thorough peer evaluations. He is also consistently ranked as Preeminent, the highest possible rating in both legal ability and ethical standards by Martindale-Hubbell and was named the Top-Rated Lawyer in Personal Injury and Medical Malpractice by American Lawyer Magazine in 2014.
Having been admitted to practice before all levels of courts in the state, the federal courts, the US Court of Federal Claims, and both the California and US Supreme Courts, Heiting are also active on numerous state and county boards and associations focused on current issues and trends in litigation, ethics, and trial best practices. His reach extends beyond California through his work as the American Bar Commissioner (west coast) appointed to the Commission on Lawyer Assistance Programs. In this role, he is responsible for studying, evaluating, and providing oversight for programs in nine states. He has also served in the past as chair of the American Bar Association’s Substance Use Disorders Advisory Board, President of the State Bar of California, President of the Riverside County Bar Association, and a charter member of the Inland Empire Federal Bar Association. Heiting has also received the two highest honors that can be awarded in regional bar associations: the James H. Krieger Meritorious Service Award (Riverside County BA) and the Florentino Garza Fortitude Award (San Bernadino County BA).
Despite his past successes, Heiting remains a man fueled by a passion to help injured victims and to ensure that the fundamental values of the American justice system are upheld for all clients and their families. To date, he has won over $300 million in damages and settlements for his clients in such areas as catastrophic injury, burns, wrongful death, medical malpractice, transportation accidents, and worker’s compensation due to negligence of individuals, government agencies, and corporations.
