Speaking of the operating system of eReaders, as we know, Kindle and reMarkable uses Linux-based system whereas Boox uses Android. If you think Android is one of the most suitable operating systems for E-ink devices, running third-party apps is probably the main reason you have. But the question is, could every app run ideally on E-ink display? Obviously not.
On account of the traits of E-ink display, it is not reasonable to run color-oriented apps on such a device. It is believed that no one would like to play Candy Crush Saga on a black & white screen. Likewise, apps with many animations are not recommended since the refresh rate of E-ink display is not expected to do that. From the above, maybe the only game we could play on E-ink devices is chess.
Back to what we concern about, Boox E-reader is actually a specific device designed for reclaiming your concentration and keeping you away from distraction by social media, games, videos, and others. Boox E-reader is designed for reading and working. Here are some highly recommended apps for those purposes.
(1) Reader App: Amazon Kindle
Amazon Kindle app is definitely the most popular apps for every eReader. A great many people know ePaper for the first time since Amazon began producing and marketing the Amazon Kindle, an e-book reader with an e-paper display in late 2007. Swiftly, Kindle dominated the market with its app. Nonetheless, Amazon persists in small size eReaders and seems not going to make it larger. This is because the main purpose of Amazon is to sell its content instead of hardware. Larger size E-ink screen will make the price of hardware go dramatically. Apparently it does not take any advantage from that.
Anyway, the Kindle app is actually a great app for those who love reading. Users can view tons of different kinds of ebooks at fingertips. Also, users can easily read free ebooks, shop for ebooks, and sync ebooks between Android, PC, Mac, iPad, iPhone, iPod touch, and of course, any Android devices. As one of the most outstanding Android-based E-ink devices, Boox is able to run the Kindle app well with a large size screen after optimization. Users could long-press the Kindle app icon, select “optimize”, find out the setting “Animation Timeout” and adjust it to 400. Afterward, the Kindle apps could work perfectly without any page flipping issue.

In nowadays, people feel like reading in more platforms like websites, apps, and social media. The New York Times is an American newspaper based in New York City with worldwide influence and readership. Its app for Android has some useful features for better news reading experience. But that is not the point. The point is most of the news apps work fairly well on Boox eReaders. Certainly you can also install a local news app and enjoy the reading, especially when you read news on 13.3″ Max2, you can feel like you are holding a real newspaper. Reading on such a device does not cause eyestrain.

If you click, say like on a link, it loads pretty quickly. To watch a video on Youtube is not that bad but it’s not recommended to do so on E-ink screens, unless you are a big fan of black and white TV shows.

Evernote helps to focus on what matters most and have access to your information when you need it. Input typed notes or scan handwritten notes. It’s the most used app for note-taking. Every note you take on the Boox devices can be synchronized to your Evernote account on desktop or laptop. Another popular note-taking app is OneNote. The performance of OneNote is not expected as Evernote. You may find it lags behind the stroke you write. It is believed that Onyx will fix it in a certain update.
(5) Office App: Microsoft Word
In the case that you want to do some office job with your Boox, the MS Word is a good choice for you. It’s a nightmare to use an on-screen keyboard for typing a long article.
