On July 21, the All American High School Film Festival (AAHSFF) announced its list of nominated films, with the documentary “Datie: The Art Tribe of Tiegang”, set in Shenzhen, China, capturing global attention for its profound theme and exceptional production quality. The film centers on a public art project in Tiegang Village, Shenzhen, delving into how public art can influence and shape urban memory in the process of urbanization.
The documentary has already garnered significant accolades and recognition at multiple international film festivals, including the Hollywood Art and Movie Awards, the International World Film Awards, the Sweden Film Awards, the Student World Impact Film Festival, and the Wyoming International Film Festival.
Beyond the fruitful achievements of the documentary, what’s truly remarkable is the team behind the film – eight middle school students from both within China and abroad. Despite their young age, these students’ professional talent and enthusiastic passion played a pivotal role in the production of the documentary. They put the theoretical knowledge they’ve learned into practice, deeply exploring and showcasing how public art influences and shapes the transformation of cities.
In the entire project, students like Bohan Baker Zhan, Binghui David Sun, Tiantian Cindy Liu, and Ziyuan Rocky Wan stood out. Their professional skills and leadership abilities played a crucial role in the production process.
Baker Zhan, a core member of the documentary team, immersed himself in the culture and art of Tiegang Village, capturing and presenting the unique aspects of the village. He shared, “During the filming process, I felt deeply that public art has a profound impact on urbanization. When the cold walls were endowed with limitless imagination, the children in the village were immersed in a world that resembled a comic strip.” This documentary journey made Baker realize that the beauty each person pursues is different, but it is this diversity that bestows documentary filmmakers with a distinctive purpose: to discover, promote, and embrace the differences, and to do extraordinary things.
David Sun’s sense of responsibility and teamwork spirit ensured the smooth progress of the project. He said, “By participating in the shooting of this documentary, I understand that every detail could impact the final product. From the lens language of every frame to the precise placement of each camera, everything needs careful consideration, as each different choice will affect the final effect of the film. All of these require tacit communication and cooperation with other members of the crew. In teamwork, I learned how to communicate and cooperate more effectively with others. From the debugging of equipment to the division of work during shooting, effective communication will accelerate the shooting progress of the entire film. I deeply realize the importance of efficiently perfecting the details to the utmost.”
As the “bridge” of the team, Cindy Liu played an important role in the film shooting. Not only did she possess solid professional knowledge and talent, but she also ensured the smooth progress of shooting work. She actively cooperated with other team members in devising shooting plans and sharing shooting skills. Moreover, her unique insights on the thematic content ensured the progress of each link in the production. For example, she vividly depicted how art impacts and shapes the development of communities and cities. She carefully handled every detail in the film, making the audience feel as if they were there, eliciting emotional resonance. Through this shooting experience, she not only enhanced her professional skills but also gained more life experience and insights.
Rocky Wan’s professional skills and aesthetic judgment played an important role in the subtitle work of the film. He said, “Subtitling work may seem simple, but the choice of every word and the translation of every sentence requires meticulous attention. By participating in the production of this documentary, I not only gained practical experience but also clarified my future learning and career direction.”
“Datie: The Art Tribe of Tiegang” presents a thought-provoking narrative about urban culture and art through its profound themes and superior production quality. Both the documentary and the team behind it are certain to spark broader attention and reflection on the preservation and development of public art.
