Infinite Minds Academy, based in Bandar Sunway, Selangor, conducts Digital Tech programs for people with Special Needs, their programs include animation development, app making, multimedia designing, basic engineering, electronics & robotics, 3D design and printing, programming, and more.
Established in 2013, their programs cater for special needs children from as young as 8 years old to special needs adults. Specifically those that are seeking to sustain themselves economically and to live with dignity, without having to depend on government handouts and public donations. Their services are mainly for those that have been diagnosed with Autism, Asperger’s Syndrome, Dyslexia, Down Syndrome, Slow Learner, ADHD, Cerebral Palsy, and those who are Deaf and Mute, etc.
Their individual strength based programs aim to empower each young adult with special needs with the necessary tech skills to be more financially independent. These skills have been carefully hand-picked from observing the current demand for job skills in the market while matching it to the strengths and abilities of their students. Furthermore, the demand for these skills have been on a sharp rise since the pandemic and many businesses turning online. Ultimately, they can choose to work from home by being self employed gig workers, or taking up various projects from the Academy.
Being in the business for more than a decade, Infinite Minds Academy has trained students not only in terms of independence, but they went on to win many awards in various competitions. For example, their students won both Gold and Silver, in app development and animation respectively, in the prestigious Malaysian Technology Expo, they were competing against university students, organisations both local and international. Beside that, during the recent Movement Control Order (MCO), their 11 year old Special Needs student who is mute and hearing impaired invented a 3D printed face mask extender for those wearing ‘tudung’ or turbans, which has been hot selling! The items were also purchased by buyers from the USA, UK, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, UAE, Australia and New Zealand via online.
People with special needs are more capable than what society perceives them to be. Technology has enhanced their ability to perform, oftentimes even superior compared to any other person. However, most are still facing the brunt of discrimination and bullying throughout their lives, especially ones with non visible disabilities much like learning disabilities that may be viewed as misbehaviours of social awkwardness instead.
Most of the programs are running fully Online now. The Covid-19 situation has been a blessing in disguise as the academy has embarked on further digital enhancements since last year. This gave the opportunity to more students to join remotely.
Infinite Minds Academy’s empowerment efforts are well supported by agencies like SME Corporation, Malaysian Global Innovation and Creativity Centre (MaGIC) and Human Resource Development Corporation. In addition, corporates like AirAsia Foundation, IJN Foundation and others had supported in purchasing these special needs students’ products and animations.
