August 21, 2020 – Since 2014, The Self Tape Space (TSTS) has helped stage and screen actors land their dream roles by perfecting their self-tape auditions. With the COVID-19 pandemic upending the entertainment industry and making in-person auditions impossible, TSTS is expanding its reach by opening a brand-new NYC studio on Monday, August 24. Located at 139 Fulton Street in the Financial District, this is TSTS’ second Manhattan location, joining the Upper West Side original near Columbia University.
“After spending so much money on self-tape auditions, I decided to open The Self Tape Space,” says TSTS founder J. Cameron Barnett, who’s performed at Off Broadway’s Signature Theatre Company and appears in a recurring role on FX’s Pose. “In this business, we are constantly investing in auditions with no guarantee of work—that shouldn’t cost so much! I want to offer other actors an affordable and high-quality self-tape studio resource. I am all about creating a drama-free audition space to help you look and feel your best—and have fun doing it—but not break the bank. The studio is modeled after everything I felt I wasn’t getting in my self-tape sessions.”
“Thank goodness for The Self Tape Space. Cam is the best! My best audition tapes came from working at The Self Tape Space!” —Ali Stroker, 2019 Tony Award winner for her performance in Oklahoma!
“I’ve booked so many jobs through The Self Tape Space, you’d be a fool to go anywhere else.” —Karen Pittman, Broadway’s Disgraced and series regular on The Morning Show.
With film and TV production restarting in certain regions and virtual theatre exploding nationwide, self-tape auditions are more important than ever, making the market incredibly competitive. TSTS, a Black-owned business, allows performers—including actors, singers, dancers, and high-school students doing college auditions—to showcase their best work. The studio provides a high-end self-tape experience from start to finish in a laid-back environment, with a professional actor to offer support and feedback. TSTS packages include a reader, a run-through of the scene or song, filming, playback on an HDTV, editing, and transfer to the client or representation. Demo reel production as well as self-tape and reader services via Zoom are also available.
COVID-19 Safety Precautions
The TSTS is following all COVID-19 guidelines set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Before entering the studio, clients have their temperature checked via non-contact infrared thermometer. Hand sanitizer is provided, and masks are required at all times except when filming. Once clients unmask, they are in the studio with the camera operator/reader, who remains masked and at a distance of at least ten feet. Clients must come alone except for minors, who may be accompanied by one adult. There are 15-minute breaks between sessions to wipe down surfaces and clean the air with Lysol Disinfectant Spray. The building uses a split HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning) system and maintains a shared bathroom in the hallway.
