San Francisco – March 10, 2020 – Booklovers’ favorite holiday, Independent Bookstore Day, returns for its sixth annual celebration on April 25th, with author readings, scavenger hunts, live music, and “book crawls” at more than 600 independent bookstores across the country. This year’s Indie Bookstore Day Ambassador is really throwing some heat: World Series Champion and Nationals pitcher Sean Doolittle. Sean is a vocal advocate for independent bookstores everywhere, using his platform as a professional athlete to promote reading and raise the profiles of indie bookstores across the country.
“I love indie bookstores because I love the safe and inclusive spaces that they create for the people in their communities,” said Sean Doolittle, Independent Bookstore Day Ambassador for 2020. “They’re more than just a place to shop. They are community centers that promote or host important events about issues that impact their communities. They promote authors and give them a space to promote their works and further their careers. They provide good jobs to people in these communities. They pay taxes (looking at you Amazon). But most importantly, indie bookstores provide really unique spaces that capture the spirit of their communities to promote reading.”
For six years running, bookstores have shown a 5% to 1000% increase in sales on Bookstore Day. Independent Bookstore Day has become second only to Christmas in terms of increasing sales at indie bookstores.
“Anyone who loves books and literature loves indie bookstores. They are where you go to find your treasures and connect with other readers and writers,” notes Independent Bookstore Day program director Samantha Schoech “I think there’s an ever-increasing understanding of how important they are to our towns and neighborhoods, too. They tend to be the anchors of flourishing communities.”
This year’s Independent Bookstore Day sponsors include the American Booksellers Association, Penguin Random House, and Ingram. Libro.fm, the first company to allow customers to purchase audiobooks through their local bookstore, has partnered with Bookstore Day to offer independent bookstore customers a gift of two free audiobooks on April 25th. You can find your nearest participating independent bookstore by using the Indie Bookstore Map.
