Major Pest Control’s guide has sensible, easy to follow steps to help anyone with a mouse infestation take control of their home. This should help people feel more comfortable and at ease in their homes this winter.

The experts at Major Pest Control know that people feel a loss of control when unwanted pests invade their space.

“The reason I’m so passionate about helping people get rid of pests, is because my family has been in this situation before,” says Jun Bukht, entomologist at Major Pest Control Edmonton, “I want to help people regain control of their home again.”

The expert team at Major Pest Control Edmonton have expert entomologists on staff and years of experience eliminating mice and other pests from homes. Their guide will help anyone dealing with mice act quickly:

–  Understanding mouse behaviour
–  Why mice target specific homes
–  Signs of a mouse infestation
–  Preventing mice from entering
–  Using mouse traps
–  Chemical baits, a last resort
–  Call professional help
–  Prevent future infestations

Why Mice Seek Shelter

As winter draws near, it’s not just homeowners seeking the warmth of indoor havens, but also tiny, uninvited guests: mice. Mice are survivors. In cold conditions with dwindling resources, they naturally gravitate towards warmth and food. Any well-insulated home, with its accessible pantry, is a prime target.

Telltale Signs of Rodent Presence

Awareness is half the battle. Homeowners need to watch for subtle signs like droppings, especially in discreet spots, gnaw marks on food containers, or even unusual nocturnal sounds.

Strengthening Home Defenses

Block entry points by sealing gaps in the foundation and where windows and doors don’t sit flush within the windowsill and door frame. Mice can squeeze into gaps as small as 3/8”, so anything larger than a quarter of an inch should be fixed. For vents and places where utilities like electricity and plumbing enter the home, install a 1/4” mesh over these openings, preventing mice and other pests from being able to enter the home.

Using Traps

There are many different kinds of traps to choose from:

– Glue Traps

– Live Traps

– Snap Traps

– Multiple Catch Traps

While live traps sound humane, the problem is what to do with the mice once they are caught. Releasing mice will cause them to run back into the home, and if released into rural areas, they will likely die from exposure. The most cost effective and efficient traps are snap traps. Place where mouse activity has been spotted, and bait with food that mice love and will smell strongly, like peanut butter or nuts and check the traps often. Remove traps that have caught multiple mice, as the mice can smell the death of other mice and will avoid. The only trap that Major Pest Control advises against is the glue trap, as they are inhumane. Stay persistent with the traps until no new signs of mice are found, particularly droppings and chew marks in food packaging.

Making Homes Unappealing to Mice

Cleaning and decluttering the outside of the home is the first step to making homes unappealing to mice. Trim foliage and overhanging trees to reduce the cover mice will use while trying to find ways into a home. Clean up clutter – put bikes and yard equipment away in sheds and throw out garbage or debris. Ensure garbage cans have tight fitting lids and keep them 18” away from the sides of the house. Avoid leaving pet food out. Inside the home, wipe up spills promptly, and don’t let dirty dishes sit out. Fix any plumbing issues, as mice will be looking for easy to access water sources.

Chemical Baits and Rodenticides

Major Pest Control Edmonton cautions that chemical solutions should be used only as a last resort. When using, exercise extreme caution and read instructions carefully, taking all outlined precautions. Use only in areas of the house that children and pets will not encounter. Store chemical baits up high in a locked cabinet to avoid accidental encounters.

Professional Help

Eliminating mouse infestations takes persistence, especially when the infestation is large. People must remain vigilant in setting and monitoring traps. However, if the problem persists, call in a professional pest control company, not just to get rid of the mice, but to help with long-term prevention strategies.

Conclusion

Let winter be a season of comfort and joy without the hassle of unwelcome rodent guests. With proactive checks, preventive measures, and timely actions, all homeowners can guarantee a snug, mouse-free home. If anyone would like help managing a mouse infestation, Major Pest Control Edmonton is available to help out.
