Can you remember when the banking sector caused the International Financial Crisis of 2007/8?
The Asian Financial Crisis struck exactly one decade earlier, but no one had the temerity to claim they were “Too Big to Fail.” Anger was vented at national leaders who seemed to have lost control. Desperate to restore their economies and fortify their political survival, several had taken handouts from international bodies, only to suffer the indignity of accepting punishing, politically damaging, one-size-fits-all, austerity measures that seemed to defy logic.
The Asian Financial Crisis was truly a dark spot in the proud history of the region, which seems to have been willfully forgotten lest we scrutinize it further and possibly learn the uncomfortable lessons that might have prevented the economic chaos of 2008.
In his book The Noah Principle, Steven Clark attempts to illuminate that dark, under-examined period by shining a spotlight on Indonesia, where exactly 25 years ago, President Suharto began to lose his absolute control. The ensuing disorder, opened up old ethnic scars in the Republic’s social fabric, culminating in a brief but brutal period of Anti-Chinese violence.
The novel’s main characters, Cain and Charlie, are two young British expats employed by the Temple-Speer Financial Advisory in Jakarta. They quickly become expendable pawns trying to survive a deadly, undeclared battle of wits between their bosses, whilst at the same time trying to avoid the vicious turmoil erupting all over the city.
Geo-political machinations, brutal ethic violence, murder, mystery, and corruption—Clark’s detailed knowledge of South-East Asia will take you on the journey of a lifetime following his carefully crafted characters through many amazing scenes and heart-stopping moments. But this incredible tale also conjures up difficult questions—some of which will force the reader to confront the uncomfortable answers he or she might already know.
