The National Kidney Donation Organization (NKDO) has reached their initial goal of 1,000 supporting members. The NKDO is the largest living kidney donation organization in the United States and educates prospective living kidney donors to donate as safely and effectively as possible. The NKDO is devoted to helping end the kidney crisis in this country. To date, the organization has spoken with over 2,000 prospective donors through the Donor Connect program. This program guides an individual interested in donation through the process by connecting them with a living kidney donor. This program has moved multiple donors through the process who have completed their donation. Each living kidney donation removes someone from the long national waitlist and changes lives for the better.
NKDO started a membership drive to create awareness that being a living kidney donor is an option to consider. Being a living kidney donor is something an individual can do and still live a completely normal life. Over 97,000 people in the United States need a kidney and finding a living kidney donor is their fastest road to transplantation. A kidney from a living donor performs better for most recipients and lasts twice as long as a kidney from a deceased donor.
In general, being a kidney donor will not slow you down or prevent you from doing most activities in which you are currently engaged. Some NKDO members are living kidney donors that run marathons, compete in Ironman competitions, continue their exercise routine, and some soon will be summiting Mount Kilimanjaro in celebration of World Kidney Day on March 10, 2022.
