5 Top Nu-Funk Artists to Watch in 2022

A definitive list of nu-funk artists that will have great new music in 2022. Cool Company, Marc Rebillet, CAPYAC, Tuxedo, Vulfpeck

1. Cool Company

Cool Company make Future R&B music.

Brooklyn-based duo Cool Company — comprised of vocalist Yannick Hughes and producer Matt Fishman — sumptuously blends hip-hop, R&B, electronic, pop and funk. Frequently bringing energetic bops equally at home on Spotify’s Nu-Funk, Choice Edits or I Love My ‘10s Funk playlists alike, their live show maintains the same uplifting soulful energy as their productions. Recently touring with Magic City Hippies and selling out shows in NYC, they continue to bring the funk wherever they go.

2. Marc Rebillet

An improvisational artist who build songs from scratch! All his released songs were made by himself entirely in one take. Marc Rebillet is an American electronic musician and YouTuber from Dallas, Texas, currently based in New York City. He is known for his improvisational electronic songs with humorous lyrics. The self-proclaimed “Loop Daddy” Rebillet primarily distributes his work via YouTube videos and Twitch live streams, in which he uses loop stations, keyboards, vocals and percussion instruments to produce funky songs in his apartment. Over 3 studio albums and EPs, he’s formed a quirky catalog of upbeat, soulful, nu-funk records.

I’d like to point out that Capyac is two things:  1) the production + songwriting duo formed in 2015 by P. Sugz (tall one) and Potion (shorty).  2) the ever-expanding live show, involving up to 12 musicians and often including mimes, dancers, sketch comedy, and cooking.

CAPYAC exist in this hybrid state — writing, producing, remixing, and DJing as a duo (+ collaborators); and performing live with all their friends.

Their second debut album “CAPYAC FOREVER” was released in 2021. They hope you like it 🙂

GROODOOS / “THE BAND” Oolaf Oolafenson, Marshall Jackson Lowry, Zach Yañez, Ciceley Fullylove, Jeff Olson, KD Kinetic, Sam Pankey, Sam Howden, Sean Lee, Legward Beantime, Jaime Aldaraca Ferrao, Bob’s Dance Shop, Alyssa & Brandon the Mimes

REMIXES FOR Cool Company, Tim Atlas, Midnight Generation, The Funk Hunters, Ishi , Benny Bridges, La Femme (unreleased), Izzy Bizu (unofficial).

4. Tuxedo

“The only time you wear a Tuxedo is when it’s time to party.”

So said legendary West Coast player Snoop Dogg on the opening track of Tuxedo II. The blessing of the Doggfather was of special importance to Mayer Hawthorne and Jake One, whose second album found them at forefront of the new wave of gangster boogie – one that owes as much to G-funk as P-funk. This is the territory of pre- and post-hydraulic low riders: a mélange of Cali boom-bap, analog synth bass and elegant funk that resonates truth and authenticity in an era where so many are faking it.

Bonding over a shared love of Chic, Parliament and the other signs in the greater funk Zodiac, Mayer Hawthorne (Aquarius) and Jake One (Taurus) were early predictors of the sea changes that American music would undergo in 2016. Their first release in March of 2015 debuted at #1 on iTunes America’s RnB charts, christened as “Dance floor catnip” by the Boston Globe, and “Pure disco-funk hot fire” by Okayplayer. The sophomore album on Stones Throw Records was premiered with a special performance on Jimmy Kimmel Live and dubbed as “Straight-up funk magic” by Noisey. Considering their individual successes (Mayer’s four solo albums, Jake’s production work for the likes of Drake, Future, The Weeknd and De La Soul) and eight GRAMMY nominations between the two of them, it’s no surprise that their powers combined have yet again yielded an absolute slapper, perfect for dance parties in 2019 and beyond.

Do you Fux with the Tux?
